Have YOU been acused of being "METRO"?

Conversation I had earlier (and so similar to so many others):

Alyssa: Where’s so and so?
Boy: Oh, he takes his time to get dressed. Haha, fag. He’s a metrosexual.
Alyssa: He’s a metrosexual because he…takes his time? He has style though.
Boy: Yeah, exactly my point.
Alyssa: What do you call a girl that has a good sense of style?
Boy: A girl.
Alyssa: A girl?
Boy: Yeah, a girl. What’s your point?
Alyssa: So a boy who spends time having style is not a boy, he is a metrosexual. And a girl who spends having style is…just a girl?
Boy: Yeah.
Alyssa: Why is that?
Boy: Why is what?
Alyssa: Why is it that a guy who cares about his looks is put down and gets a special demeaning name while a girl who does the exact same thing, if not worse, is just…being a girl?
Boy: Because girls are supposed to care how they look.

Excuse me while I gag myself to death. For all the men out there who are criticized for having style or for looking like he cares (gasp!), I am sorry about these unstylish insecure men. And for those out there who use this disgusting word, shame shame, I probably know your name.

Just because a guy has style does not make him a “metro”. It simply means he has style. Just as girl who has style is not called anything but a girl with style. What's the definition of metrosexual anyways? Some define metrosexual as "a straight man in touch with his feminine side". Others classify it with more specificity, such as "a straight man, who lives in an inner-city environment, who is into designer clothes, art museums, musicals, and other non-macho pursuits." (non-macho…nice)

It’s all a part of the femiphobia that has been going on since the dawn of time. How the worst thing you can call a guy is girl- and the worst thing you can call a girl is (you guessed it!) a girl. It’s also messed up the way girls are the only ones (supposedly) who should care how they look. The fact that being metrosexal is associated with acting like a girl is what really gets me. Why? Because being called metrosexual is never used in a good sense. When was the last time you heard, “Hey bob, you’re looking supa metro today! Kudos!”. It’s used in a way of, well, calling a guy a girl! Psh, and who wants to be that? Not I! Back off and learn a thing or two from a man who has self respect and confidence because (a) we are all human and share the SAME feelings and (b) it feels good when you look good, regardless if you have breasts or not.
I’ve even heard someone (an unnamed guy friend) say that wearing lotion was “so metro”. Yeah, because taking care of your body is something only GIRLS should do. And you don’t want to be seen acting like a GIRL now do you? No, no you most certainly do not.

The stuff that metrosexuals are thought to like, such as good clothes, art museums, and the theater, are things that I thought meant that you had class and cultural sophistication. Since when did all of these things become linked with one's sexuality? I read one person's definition online somewhere that a metrosexual was someone who has books in his house and has actually read them. What the- ? I thought a person who has books that he read was called "educated", not "metrosexual." Do men have to shun reading to prove that they're not gay?

Are you only a real man if you wear shabby old clothes and spend all your free time watching football on TV? This is what a lot of men out there seem to be trying to tell us.

To conclude my ranting, don't use this word. Ever. Unless you are talking about how dumb it is, I (and I'm sure the guy you are talking about) really don't care for your oh-so-macho and manly arrogance.
